What is DSL?
DSL stands for Digital Subscriber Line. DSL uses standard copper phone line to transmit data at very high speeds.

How does DSL come into my business/residence?
ADSL comes in over your existing phone line. Unlike a dial-up modem, it doesn't tie up the phone though; you can talk on the phone and surf the internet at the same time. And your connection is always on!
Our Dedicated Loop ADSL, SDSL, and IDSL customers are provided with service that runs over a dedicated pair of copper wires. Your phone services and DSL service would be on completely different wiring.

How fast is DSL?
Our fastest speed is currently 6.0Mbps, or over 100 times faster than dialup! Whether this speed is available at your location depends on how far you are from the CO (Central Office), and the line quality between you and the CO. The Central Office is the main switching location for the phone lines in your area. The local phone company (also called ILEC, or Incumbent Local Exchange Carrier) controls the phone circuits here and routes between local and long distance lines.

What kinds of DSL are there?
ADSL stands for Asynchronous DSL. The download speed is much faster than the upload speed, which is perfect for residential users or small businesses, which do a lot of surfing or downloading.

Dedicated Loop ADSL is ADSL that doesn't come over your regular phone line; a separate DSL-only line is installed. This is perfect for people who don't use the local phone company, like those with 3rd-party providers, or wireless.

SDSL is Synchronous DSL, where the upload and download speeds are the same. This is mainly for businesses which need a more reliable connection, guaranteed speeds, guaranteed repair times, and do as much uploading as downloading.

T1 is the most reliable of all high-speed internet connections, when your business critically depends on being online. This service comes with a fantastic Service Level Agreement guaranteeing your service.

IDSL is IDSN technology over the phone line. It provides 144/144 speed and can go farther than standard DSL. If you cannot get faster ADSL or SDSL because of distance from the CO, or line-quality issues, you may still be able to get IDSL.

I already have Dialup with Net Wizards; can I keep my dialup account as a backup?
Sure! In the unlikely event that your DSL service has a problem, you are not cut off from the internet. You can also use your dialup while traveling.
back to questions

Do I need to have phone service through a particular phone company?
If you are getting the regular "line shared" ADSL, then you need to use the local phone company, or ILEC (Incumbent Local Exchange Carrier). If you're not, don't worry, you can just order Dedicated Loop ADSL.
back to questions

What phone number and address should I provide?
You need to provide the address of the actual location where the DSL will be installed, and the phone number for the actual line it will be installed on. If you are ordering Dedicated Loop ADSL or SDSL, provide the phone number for a line closest to where the DSL line will go.
Make sure the address and name you provide is EXACTLY what your phone bill has (including spelling and punctuation). If not, your order could be delayed.
back to questions

How long before my DSL is installed?
Our line shared ADSL installations average 1-2 weeks from order placement to installation. Our Dedicated Loop ADSL and SDSL installations usually take 2-4 weeks. T1 installation should be under 30 days.

The installation time depends on line quality, the phone company workload, and (for Professional Install services) installation appointment availability.
back to questions

Who is involved with installing my DSL?
There are three companies that work together to provide you with High Speed Internet Access:

1. The ILEC (the local phone company, Incumbent Local Exchange Carrier). The ILEC owns the physical wiring up on the poles. We have to send the DSL through their wiring to get to you.

2. The CLEC (Competitive Local Exchange Carrier). The CLEC leases the basic infrastructure from the ILEC to provide the DSL line.

3. Net Wizards. We provide the services that make your DSL connection a complete solution: web hosting, e-mail, customer support and billing functions.

What are the steps for installing DSL?

Call us at 1-888-346-3894 (1-888-34-NETWIZ) to get your order started.

We'll run your address and phone number through our qualification system to see what DSL service is available in your location.

Once you select a type and speed, we'll have some other questions, such as what operating system your computer uses, what kind of equipment you want, etc.

For self-installed line-shared services, it will take 7-14 days to deliver the line. The work is done at the Central Office, so no one will need to come to your location. At that point, you just install the kit we send! And you can call us for help if you have any trouble getting it up and running.

For Professional Installs, a technician will come to your location to get you setup. We'll schedule an install date and let you know when it is. If it's not convenient for you, you can always reschedule.

You'll be sent a link to a web page that lists the progress of your installation.

What about additional Inside Wiring?
