What to do if your DSL goes down

Authentication

Although your DSL connection is "always on," you will need to authenticate through your DSL modem to receive an IP address and connect to the internet. This is done by sending a userid and password with PPPoE (Point-to-Point Protocol over Ethernet).

DSL Modem Direct Connect

If your DSL modem is connected directly to your computer, then your computer will need a PPPoE dialer. Windows XP has one built-in.

***

To setup your DSL Connection in Windows XP, first go to your Windows Control Panel (you can get there through "My Computer" or click Start, then Settings).

Go to Network Connections (or "Network and Internet Connections," then "Network Connections" under "Pick a Control Panel Icon").

Click "Create a new connection" or click File-->New Connection.

A box should say "Welcome to the New Connection Wizard." Click next.

Check "Connect to the Internet" and click Next.

Check "Set up my connection manually" and click Next.

Check "Connect using a broadband connection that requires a user name and password" and click Next.

Type "Net Wizards DSL" in the ISP Name box and click Next.

Enter your user name and your password. If you have Telesurfer DSL (Dynamic IP Address) then your userid will be of the form username@netwiz.net. If you have TeleSOHO (Static IP Address) your username will be userid@bzn or userid@bz8. Check your install kit documentation for this info, or contact us.

Select or unselect any options you want. Click Next.

You may want to click "Add a shortcut to this connection to my desktop." Click Finish.

That's it! Just use this icon to connect to the internet. Make sure you have your Local Area Connection enabled first.

Advanced Settings

Right-click on your dialup networking connection in Network Connections and select Properties. Click the Networking tab. Go to the properties for TCP/IP. Make sure it has "Obtain and IP Address automatically" and "Obtain DNS servers automatically."

***

If your computer does not have built-in PPPoE support, you can use the dialer that came with your DSL kit.

What to do if your DSL goes down

First, turn off your DSL Modem, and your router if you have one. Let the modem rest for about two minutes. Then turn it back on. Watch the DSL light. It should blink green, then go to a solid green. If it does not, please contact us.

If it goes solid green, then turn on your router.

If your connection is still not back up, there are some other things to check. If you are using a wireless connection, try plugging in to your router with a wired connection.

Reboot your computer.

Verify that your Local Area Connection is enabled.

Make sure that you aren't trying to check your e-mail as the test of whether you are online or not. Instead, open a web browser and try to go to google.com.

Or click Start-->Run and type: cmd

Then type: ping google.com

You can also try to ping an IP address. 198.41.0.4 is the IP of one of the root nameservers for the internet. Type: ping 198.41.0.4

If you are not using a router, verify your userid and password are correct. Note any error messages when you try to authenticate.

If you are using a router, try and access the router from your computer. For many routers, you would just browse to http://192.168.1.1/ Check your router documentation for more information.

Check the status of the connection in the router control panel. Does it say disconnected? What happens if you try to connect there? Check your userid and password.

If you are still having trouble, please contact us!
